If you’re in this group, you are a mother. We know mother, and motherhood, can be defined in many ways. Today, we will define it as a protector, disciplinarian, and friend. All three traits Kalie brings to this community. When I joined OCBM, I saw a lot of posts and events. Honestly, it was a little overwhelming. When I met Kalie in person I had two thoughts: 1) she has a lot of energy, like a ball of kinetic energy and 2) she is a Svengali. Now let me explain that. Svengali can have a negative connotation, but in this instance I mean it in the best sense. Kalie possesses vision and with that vision comes the skill of seeing talents and skills in others. She has the ability to assemble a team to turn a group into a community. That is a rare trait. Benny Medina has it and in turn, we got the Fresh Prince (minus his whole 2022 fiasco) and Jennifer Lopez. Clive Davis has it and gave us “the voice,” Whitney Houston.
As a spectator, it is hard to imagine how much labor goes into maintaining our Black Mom oasis, but Kalie does an excellent job of protecting our group from harm and interlopers (a vocab word for you, Mala lol). She is not afraid to call us out if we exhibit behavior that might endanger our group from violating FB standards. Kalie collects data and researches the best practices to ensure our community remains intact and thrives. So the guidelines she implements are rooted in evidence-based practices, which is pretty impressive.
As a friend, Kalie enjoys watching all the relationships forming in this group. She loves a good brunch and any event where good conversations lead to laughter and joy. Kalie is unafraid to share the spotlight and enthusiastically welcomes others to shine. She is an achiever that encourages us all to be our best selves. If you have not met her in person, you are in for a treat when you do!
In addition to brunch, Kalie loves the spa. But my guess is if she had 24 hours to do anything, she would have to be on the move. Not necessarily something athletic, but the day would have to involve activities and loved ones. She is a mama bear, so she would likely have one activity that caters to her son. Another one that caters to her daughter’s interests. Then end the day with a romantic dinner with her husband. A busy, yet fulfilling day. I hope this bio shared some new information about Kalie, my friend, my sister. One year into OC Black Moms and a lifetime to go! – Candice
