(and Yes, I Mean Me… I Am “Book-Loving Person”)
This list is a blend of things I’ve thought about nonstop for years and finally caved and bought… plus the things I still haven’t treated myself to because I’m hoping someone special (you know who you are) gets the hint. And if YOU, my fellow book-loving friend, see something here you love, go ahead and forward this article to your partner, sugar supplier or your friend who’s love language is gift-giving with a gentle, “loved this blog” They’ll understand.
1. An eReader (AKA: A Digital Portal to Happiness)
Listen, there are many eReaders out there—Kindle, Kobo, Nook, magical tablets from other dimensions—I am leaving the brand loyalty battle up to you.
What I WILL say is this: I tried using my iPad as an eReader and… absolutely not. That thing is a glowing rectangle of distraction. I open a book and suddenly I’m deep-diving into a 40-minute video about how a women as swindled by a man in Nigeria.
So your girl is upgrading to a Kindle Paperwhite: no ads (because why am I paying to be marketed to? Late-stage capitalism is wild) lightweight and allegedly perfect for reading in every possible location—including the places we don’t talk about.
Anyway, back to the list before I get sidetracked again…
2. A Book Embosser or Stamp (For When People “Accidentally” Don’t Return Your Books)
This year, I lost several books to the void. And by “the void,” I mean friends, family, acquaintances, and that one mother-in-law who swore she would bring it back Monday.
But I’m not mad…
Okay, tiny bit irritated.
So I finally ordered myself a book embosser because if my books are going out into the world like little literary soldiers, they better have my name proudly stamped on them.
It’s classy, it’s dramatic, and it dramatically reduces the odds of someone pretending they forgot who that book belongs to.
3. WARM Loungewear (Yes, It Must Be in All Caps)
If you give a book lover warm loungewear, they will read more. It’s science.
This category is broad, so let me guide you:
- House Slippers (the plush kind that make you walk around like you own a chalet)
- A Book Lover Sweater (bonus points if it has a pun, but tasteful, not chaotic)
- A Cozy Blanket (think SOFT—whisper-soft—cloud-soft—baby-angel-cheek-soft)
And please, I beg, TOUCH the blanket before buying. If you wouldn’t want to curl up in it during a storm while reading a romance novel, it’s not soft enough.
4. Books… But Like, Be Serious About It
Book lovers love books—shocking, I know. But we are also very particular. Do not, under any circumstances, go into a store and pick a random book because “the cover was interesting.”
Here’s what we actually want:
- Hardcovers of Our Five-Star Reads
You know that book we wouldn’t shut up about? The one we mentioned seven times in one conversation? That one. We want that one in hardcover, pristine, no scratches, no weird remainder marks and no sale stickers.
- Gorgeous Coffee Table Books
Michelle Obama’s The Look. Absolutely, emphatically, yes please. Pair that with Black in Fashion: 100 Years of Style, Influence & Culture, Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers, Architectural Digest at 100: A Century of Style, or the ever-iconic Assouline New York Chic, and suddenly your living room isn’t just a living room — it’s a curated gallery of intellect, taste, and generational excellence.- Let’s be clear: coffee table books of this caliber are luxury objects. They are pricey, they are precious, and they are to be treated with the same reverence one might offer a rare diamond or a fragile Renaissance fresco.
- They must arrive in pristine, mint, untouched-by-mere-mortals condition. No dents, no smudges, no “Oh, I accidentally flipped through it while drinking iced coffee.” Absolutely not!
- Proper handling protocol:
- Wear gloves (white cotton preferred, satin acceptable).
- Move slowly as if you are unveiling a national treasure.
- Speak softly, because the book deserves an ambiance.
- And yes, cue classical music — something with violins, something that makes you feel like art is happening.
- And listen… if you somehow manage to acquire a coffee table book signed by the author?
- Just know that you will be hailed as royalty.
- Admired. Cherished. Serenaded.
- You will ascend to a higher social tier and be forever loved, adored, and possibly worshipped by whoever receives it.
- Because a signed coffee table book is not just a gift —it is an heirloom.
- Proper handling protocol:
- Audiobook Credits or Bookstore Gift Cards
This is for the lazy gift givers, but honestly… we’ll take it. It’s basically permission to go feral in a bookstore, and that’s a joy in itself.
5. A Reading Retreat (Let Me Dream, Please)
Now, this is the crown jewel of gifts. The dream. The fantasy. The pinnacle.
A reading retreat is literally a vacation designed for book lovers. Imagine:
- A cozy location
- Quiet reading nooks
- Other book-obsessed humans
- Snacks (very important)
- Time to read without guilt
- Conversations about fictional people like they’re real
A girl can dream…
Final Thoughts
There you have it—my top five gifts for the reader in your life, who may or may not be me, but definitely is me. Whether you’re shopping for someone else or pretending to while secretly building your own wishlist, I hope this helps.
Now go forth, buy thoughtfully, and remember: all we really want is to be warm, cozy, and left alone with our books until January.
Happy gifting, my literary loves!
