Then & Now

September 2025

Every so often, I believe it’s important to pause, reflect, and ask ourselves: Where am I? What do I need? Today, I’m checking in with myself—and with all of you, the incredible mothers in this group—about what this community means and what you’re seeking from it.

When I created OC Black Moms back in April 2021, I was naïve but optimistic. I simply wanted to meet other Black families in Orange County. Honestly, I hoped there were at least 30 of us out here—and maybe a few with kids the same age as mine.

Fast forward four years, and what has grown is more than I could have imagined. I’ve met hundreds of mothers in person and countless more online. I’ve gained not just friends, but my best friends. My husband has found his circle, and our family has found roots in a community that feels like home. This space has given us belonging, joy, and connection—and my deepest wish is that each of you find the same.

But let me be clear: none of this happens without vulnerability. None of it happens without stepping outside your comfort zone. The magic of this group has always come from women willing to show up, risk awkwardness, and open their hearts. That’s the only way real community is built.

Now, what my family needs looks different than it did in 2021. I find myself craving more enrichment—experiences and education I can’t create on my own. That’s why you’ve seen more focus on book clubs, arts, music, and cultural outings. It’s about elevating the experience: not just walking into a grocery store and not being the only Black family, but walking into the symphony, the museum, or the theater and knowing we are there together. That is the level my soul is asking for, and I invite you to join us.

So I’ll turn the question back to you: What does your family need right now?

  • Maybe it’s traveling abroad with other Black families.
  • Maybe it’s creating a Black lacrosse team or a STEAM mentorship program for teens.
  • Maybe you’re a mom of a newborn craving postpartum walks with someone who understands.
  • Maybe you’ve got toddlers and just need playdates at the park.
  • Maybe you’re an empty nester wanting a midweek coffee date.
  • Maybe you and your partner want to connect with other couples who value strong marriages.

Whatever it is, this group can be that for you—but only if you’re willing to step up, lead, and invite others along.

As we transition into a new leadership term this October, my challenge to you is this: don’t just consume this community—create in it. Be the spark that builds the experience your family needs. You’ll change your life, your family’s life, and this community’s future.

As for me—I’ll still be here. To guide, to inspire, and to fiercely protect this group. Because let’s be real: this is not a business opportunity, and it’s definitely not a runway show. We don’t care how perfect your filters are or whether your selfies are on point. We are mothers—real women raising the next generation of brilliant, kind, and resilient children. And that mission will always outshine anyone’s Instagram aesthetic.

So here’s my reminder:
✨ Be bougie in your dreams.
✨ Be classy in your leadership.
✨ Be funny in your grace.
✨ But most importantly—be bold enough to step up.

The community you want will only exist if you help create it.
